Bob Berlin on WGN Discussing SAFE-T Act Amendment

WHEATON - The SAFE-T Act has been amended, most notably, to change the "dangerousness standard" for detaining a defendant before trial. Prior to the amendment, prosecutors were required to demonstrate a defendant's danger to a named person. Now prosecutors need to prove a defendant's danger to the community in order for the defendant to be detained.

This amendment would not have been possible without Bob Berlin's leadership and input, as he worked with leading Senators and Representatives to shape the now-improved law.

This change, among others, will allow judges greater discretion, and prosecutors fair opportunity, to keep dangerous criminals from being put back out on the street while awaiting trial.
