Bond set at $500,000 for Carol Stream Man charged with Attempting to Kidnap Juvenile near park
Carol Stream - DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert B. Berlin and Carol Stream Chief of Police William Holmer announced today that a Carol Stream man is facing multiple felony charges for allegedly grabbing a thirteen-year-old girl around the waist and attempting to carry her away. Humberto Caldera, 31 (d.o.b. 4/21/1989) of the 400 Block of Silverleaf Boulevard, appeared at a bond hearing this morning where Judge Jeffrey MacKay set bond at $500,000 with 10% to apply. Caldera has been charged with one count of Kidnapping (Class 2 Felony), one count of Aggravated Battery in a Public Place (Class 3 Felony) and one count of Unlawful Restraint (Class 4 Felony).
On August 7, 2020, Carol Stream Police officers responded to an area near Armstrong Park for the report of a kidnapping and aggravated battery. Through their investigations, officers learned that the victim, a thirteen-year-old girl, and three other juveniles were walking home when they were approached by an unknown male. It is alleged that the unknown male, later identified as Caldera, ran up behind the victim, forcefully grabbed her around the waist and tried to abduct her. It is alleged that Caldera released the girl from his grasp when two of the other juveniles, both males, began hitting Caldera. It is further alleged that Caldera then fled the scene. An investigation into the matter led by the Carol Stream Police Department led to Caldera who was taken into custody on August 26 without incident.
“The type of disturbing behavior alleged against Mr. Caldera will not be tolerated in DuPage County and will be met with the full force and effect of the law,” Berlin said. “Our children are among society’s most vulnerable and it is imperative that we do all we can to keep them safe. Thankfully, with help from those who were with her, the victim was not physically harmed and was able to free herself. I would like to thank the Carol Stream Police Department, for their outstanding work in the identification and apprehension of Mr. Caldera. I would also like to thank Assistant State’s Attorneys Claudia Fantauzzo and Mike Fisher for their work in securing charges against Mr. Caldera.”
“The work put forth by Carol Stream Police Officers exemplifies their dedication and concern for the community,” Chief Holmer said. “I also want to thank the DuPage County States Attorney, DuPage County Sheriff’s Office, DuPage Metropolitan Enforcement Group, Glendale Heights Police, and the Mount Prospect Police for their help putting this case together.”
Caldera’s next court appearance is scheduled for arraignment on September 1, 2020, in front of Judge MacKay.
Members of the public are reminded that this complaint contains only charges and is not proof of the defendant’s guilt. The defendant is presumed innocent and is entitled to a fair trial in which it is the government’s burden to prove his or her guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.
