Bond Denied for Chicago Man Charged with Hijacking Vehicle at Gunpoint in Lisle

WHEATON – DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert Berlin and Lisle Chief of Police Kevin Licko announced today that bond has been denied for a Chicago man accused of hijacking a woman’s car at gunpoint from a Lisle gas station. Daniel Boyd, 31 (d.o.b. 10/10/1990) of the 0-100 block of E. 75th Street, appeared in Bond Court this morning where Judge David Schwartz denied bond. Boyd has been charged with one count of Aggravated Vehicular Hijacking and one count of Armed Habitual Criminal, both offenses are a Class X Felony.

On June 11, 2022, at approximately 12:17 a.m., Lisle police responded to the Speedway gas station located on Ogden Avenue near I-355 for a call of a vehicular hijacking. Through their investigation, authorities learned that the victim and another individual went to the gas station and that the passenger of the vehicle went into the store to make a purchase. It is alleged that while the victim was waiting in her BMW, a man wearing a mask that covered most of his face, later identified as Boyd, approached the driver’s side of the vehicle, pointed a handgun with an extended magazine at the victim and ordered her out of the car. It is further alleged that once out of her car, Boyd ordered the woman to get on the ground and repeatedly yelled “stay there.” It is further alleged that Boyd entered the woman’s car and fled at which time the woman entered the gas station and called 911. Law enforcement located the vehicle a short time later and initiated pursuit. It is alleged that while in pursuit, the BMW ran out of gas in Will County and that Boyd fled the vehicle on foot with the victim’s handbag, which contained a legally-owned handgun, into the woods near 127th Street and New Avenue. Authorities followed Boyd into the woods and at approximately 2:30 a.m. Boyd was taken into custody after being tased by law enforcement. At this morning’s bond hearing, the State alleged that Boyd admitted that prior to being tased, he was reaching into the handbag and considered shooting the police.

“Judge Schwartz’s granting of the State’s motion to deny bail for Mr. Boyd sends the message that in DuPage County, we will not tolerate violent criminal activity, as alleged in this case,” Berlin said. “Additionally, the full and quick response from multiple law enforcement agencies further demonstrates our commitment to public safety and the pursuit of justice. Thankfully, no one was physically injured as a result of Mr. Boyd’s alleged actions. I thank the Lisle Police Department as well as the multiple law enforcement agencies involved, including the Will County Sheriff’s Office and the Forest View and Cicero Police Departments, for their outstanding, cooperative efforts in bringing this defendant into custody. Without their assistance, this arrest may not have taken place. I also thank Assistant State’s Attorneys Denis Cahill and Connor Greene for their efforts in securing charges against Mr. Boyd.”

“Our priority is to keep Lisle as a safe and welcoming community,” Licko said. “Individuals that threaten that, will be caught and held accountable."

Boyd’s next court appearance is scheduled for July 11, 2022, for arraignment in front of Judge John Kinsella. He faces a penalty of between 21-45 years in the Illinois Department of Corrections if convicted on all counts.

Members of the public are reminded that this complaint contains only charges and is not proof of the defendant’s guilt. A defendant is presumed innocent and is entitled to a fair trial in which it is the government’s burden to prove his or her guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.
