Chicago Man Free on Bond From Cook County Charged with Illegal Possession of a Firearm
Convicted felon found to be in possession of a loaded handgun with a serial number that had been filed off is charged with Class X Felony as an “Armed Habitual Criminal.”
WHEATON - DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert B. Berlin announced today a two-time convicted felon who is currently out on bond out of Cook County will be held on a $150,000 with 10% to apply bond after he was allegedly found to be in possession of a loaded handgun. The State had asked that the defendant be held without bond. Keith Summers, 26 (d.o.b. 10/18/1994) of Wheaton, previously appeared at a bond hearing on Friday, March 5, where the Court granted his request to delay the hearing to allow the defendant to obtain private counsel. Judge John Kinsella presided over this morning’s bond hearing. Summers has been charged with one count of Armed Habitual Criminal (Class X Felony).
Through the course of an investigation into shots fired on February 24, 2021 on I-55 at Cicero Avenue, authorities were led to an apartment located at 2 Wheaton Center, which was later identified as an apartment the defendant shares with his girlfriend. On March 4, 2021, the Illinois State Police with assistance from the Wheaton Police Department executed a search warrant at the defendant’s apartment where they allegedly recovered a loaded Glock handgun with an extended-round magazine. It is further alleged that the serial number for the handgun had been removed. Summers was taken into custody at this time.
“As a two-time convicted felon, who is currently out on bond on Armed Habitual Criminal charges, there is absolutely no reason whatsoever that Mr. Summers should have been in possession of a handgun, as alleged in this case,” Berlin said. “The allegation that Mr. Summers continued to break the law while on bond are outrageous and will be met with the full force of the law. The only way to protect the public from a man who has no regard for the rule of law and continues to commit violent crimes while on bond for violent crimes is to hold that individual in custody pending trial. I would like to thank the Illinois State Police for their outstanding work that led to today’s charges as well as the Wheaton Police Department for their assistance. I would also like to thank Assistant States Attorneys Amanda Meindl and Patrick Miner for their efforts in preparing a strong case against Mr. Summers.”
Summer’s next court appearance is scheduled for March 24, 2021, in front of Judge Kinsella for arraignment.
