GLEN ELLYN - On January 16, 2025, DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert “Bob” Berlin delivered opening remarks at DuPage County’s “School Safety Summit 2025” at the College of DuPage. Berlin summarized the importance of the event stating, “There is nothing more important than protecting our kids and teachers at school.”

The all-day workshop provided stakeholders - like teachers, administrators, law enforcement officers, elected officials and more - with the opportunity to gain a deeper understanding regarding their respective roles in preventing school violence, responding to school critical incidents, and recovering from crisis events.

Topics and other speakers for the event included:

  • Chin Rodgers, mother of Elliott, who shot and killed 6 people and injured 14 in a 2014 massacre in Santa Barbara;

  • Mark Dallas, a retired SRO who prevented a Dixon, Illinois school shooter from accessing students and staff in 2018;

  • Mike Buenrostro, safety educator, who discussed the National Incident Management System (NIMS); and

  • Tom Mefferd, instructor at the Homeland Security Training Institute at College of DuPage, who shared how the Illinois School Safety Drill Act keeps schools safe.

The summit was sponsored by the DuPage County Regional Office of Education and organized by John Heiderscheidt, Safety Specialist.
