Bond Set at $1 Million for Two Men Charged with Robbing Two DuPage County Gas Stations at Gunpoint
“The identification and apprehension of the defendants in this case sends the message that if you commit a violent crime in DuPage County, you will be caught and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law,” Berlin said
WHEATON – DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert Berlin, Downers Grove Chief of Police Shanon Gillette and Darien Chief of Police Greg Thomas announced today that bond has been set for two men currently on probation for robbery out of Cook County charged with robbing two DuPage County gas stations at gunpoint. Anthony Owens, 23 (d.o.b. 7/18/1998) of the 1000 block of Angelica Circle, Joliet and Wanya Webb, 22 (d.o.b. 8/29/1999) of the 1800 block of S. Komensky, Chicago, each appeared in Bond Court this morning where Judge George Ford set bond at $1million with 10% to apply for each man. Both men have been charged with two counts of Armed Robbery, a Class X Felony, punishable by 6 to 30 years in the Illinois Department of Corrections.
On September 6, 2021, at approximately 9:26 p.m. an armed robbery occurred at the Speedway Gas Station located at 5004 Fairview Avenue, Downers Grove. Following an investigation into the robbery, it is alleged that Owens and Webb entered the gas station at which time Owens walked around the counter, pointed a handgun, later determined to be an air soft pistol, at the clerk and demanded the cash drawer. It is alleged that the clerk handed over the cash drawer and then Owens and Webb fled on foot. Further investigation into the crime led authorities to a similar armed robbery in Darien committed earlier this month. On September 1, 2021, at approximately 12:07 a.m., an armed robbery occurred at the Shell Gas Station located at 8226 Cass Avenue. It is alleged that two men, later identified as Owens and Webb, entered the gas station and once inside Owens pointed a handgun, later determined to be an air soft pistol, at the clerk and demanded the cash drawer. It is further alleged that after obtaining the cash drawer the offenders fled the scene on foot. On September 17, the Downers Grove Police, with the assistance of DuMeg, apprehended both defendants as they were driving in DuPage County.
“The identification and apprehension of the defendants in this case sends the message that if you commit a violent crime in DuPage County, you will be caught and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law,” Berlin said. “I thank the Downers Grove and Darien Police Departments for their exceptional police work on this case as well as the DuPage Metropolitan Enforcement Group for their assistance. I also thank Assistant State’s Attorneys Kristin Sullivan and Katharine Klosowski for their efforts on this case.”
“I would like to thank all of the officers involved in this investigation for their exceptional performance and determination to bring this case to a safe and successful resolution,” Gillette said. “I would also like to thank State’s Attorney Bob Berlin and his team for their support and guidance.”
The next court date for both men is scheduled for October 12, 2021, for arraignment in front of Judge John Kinsella.
Members of the public are reminded that this complaint contains only charges and is not proof of the defendants’ guilt. The defendants are presumed innocent and are entitled to a fair trial in which it is the government’s burden to prove their guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.
